Happy October friends! Okay, so while I am a Summer Person™ forever, fall always arrives with some nice atmospheric reading, music, and other ephemera. This week, instead of a writing prompt, I offer you bits and pieces that I’ve enjoyed lately:
“The Nativity” by Jackson Beardy, an Oji-Cree artist. The painting depicts a pregnant Mary, connected to the sun as though by umbilical cord, with Jesus visible in her uterus. I’ve looked at this image so many times over the past year.
“Press the peel for zest. We’re nothing but brief bodies.” h/t to
for sharing this absolute zinger of a poem by Joy Sullivan. For San Diego Magazine, I recently talked to Julie Collens of Stone Steps Herbarium. Collens creates art from foraged and pressed seaweed, and her prints are lively and somehow alien—worth your perusal. (Relatedly, I also wrote about how to plan a creative retreat to Santa Fe, New Mexico for San Diego Magazine. If you’re in a travel mood, check it out; Santa Fe is, IMO, the perfect fall destination.)
“As a mother, I’m most interested in telling my children stories that will help them adapt and survive—through their relationships, their resourcefulness, their enchantments—on a damaged planet." Highly recommend
’s essay for Orion Magazine, “Rewilding the Fairytale.”Been listening to this song on repeat for a month. Still not tired of it.
